Searches for “gua sha Indian Trail NC” often mix two very different services: a jade roller at a facial bar, and gua sha as Traditional Chinese Medicine — scraping to move sha (stagnation) from muscle and the exterior. Superior Traditional Acupuncture at 6580 Old Monroe Road Suite A offers the second. Susanna Yeung, L.Ac., NCCAOM board-certified, uses a smooth-edged instrument on the neck, shoulders, or back when pulse and tongue diagnosis show Blood stasis, Wind-Cold lodging, or myofascial holding — not because Instagram asked for it.
What clinical gua sha actually does
Gua sha draws a round-edged tool across lubricated skin until petechiae (sha) appear. In TCM that reddening is a sign stagnation is being brought to the surface so Qi and Blood can move. Patients from Fairview, Lake Park, and Shiloh Trace typically book it for neck stiffness after desk work, a cold that “settled in the upper back,” or headache that starts as trapezius armor. Marks fade over several days. They are not bruises from injury; Susanna explains the difference before treatment so you are not surprised in a tank top at Crooked Creek Park.
How this differs from facial gua sha on Old Monroe Road retail
Cosmetic facial tools do not follow channel theory, do not require Clean Needle Technique certification, and are not screened for fever, skin infection, or anticoagulant use. Clinical scraping at this clinic is an adjunct to acupuncture. If your pattern is Kidney deficiency with empty Heat and little stagnation, gua sha may not be indicated that visit — and she will say so. That honesty is why Union County patients who tried a spa first still drive to Suite A.
When Indian Trail patients combine scraping with needles
A common sequence: acupuncture to regulate the root pattern, then gua sha on a local channel (Gallbladder or Bladder on the neck, for example) when the tissue is tight and recent. Migraineurs who live off Wesley Chapel-Stouts Road often present with that combination — Liver Yang rising plus cervical holding. Scraping is skipped during acute fever, over broken skin, or when you would rather not have visible marks before an event.
Parking, timing, and what to wear
Street-level parking at Suite A. Wear a loose top you can lower at the shoulders, or expect a gown. Sessions stay with one clinician. New patients can use the complimentary consult to ask whether gua sha belongs in the first treatment or should wait until a series is underway.

Frequently asked questions
Is gua sha available in Indian Trail besides spas?
Yes. Clinical gua sha at Superior Traditional Acupuncture is Traditional Chinese Medicine performed by a licensed acupuncturist after diagnosis — not a facial add-on.
Will gua sha leave marks I can see at work?
Often yes, for a few days, especially on the upper back and neck. Tell Susanna if you have photos, a wedding, or a sleeveless event so she can skip or limit the area.
Can I get gua sha without acupuncture?
Sometimes, after intake. Many patterns respond better when scraping follows needle work. She will not sell gua sha as a menu item if the diagnosis does not support it.
Is gua sha the same as cupping?
No. Cupping uses suction; gua sha uses a tool stroke. Both move stagnation. Susanna chooses one, both, or neither based on the visit — not a package upsell.
